All of us dream of achieving great things in life and hope fervently that our dreams will come true someday. Though nothing seems to be wrong with this approach of dreaming and hoping, realistically speaking, where can it get us? Does it show us the right paths to take or how to proceed along with them or what to do in case of setbacks? Not really. 

Afterall dreams are just wishful thinking. And, just wishful thinking will get us nowhere. That doesn’t mean we need to ignore or abandon our dreams. They need to be strongly backed up by goals. Dreams find their best use as the basis for our personal goals. 

The success mantra of achievers is the creation of a chain of personal goals as stepping stones for the realization of their dreams. Setting multiple personal goals and pursuing them diligently is the only path to success. Hard work and relentless quest are the best buddies to take along with us on this journey.

It is important to break up the main goal into smaller ones for better realization. Starting with smaller and achievable goals can help in building up motivation, confidence, and will power to move forward and see it through to the end. Smaller goals may look insignificant on its own, but in the bigger scheme of things, they act as launch pads for the coming goals.

Here are some tips on how to set personal goals and how to pursue them.

1. Write them down

The best way to gain clarity of thought is by writing things down using a paper and pen. Set aside some time for this and find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed. You may even enhance the atmosphere with soothing music, scented candles, and dimmed light. Spend some time thinking about what you want to achieve in this life. Break it up into goals for the present, near future, and way far ahead. While at it, include only those goals that make you happy.

2. Device an action plan

Once you have your list of goals ready, it is time to chalk out a plan. Draw up a strategy for each of the goals. When to start, what you need to do, and more details such as location and expense. Planning each goal from start to finish is vital for its success.

3. Make it part of your daily routine

Keep the list of goals and the plan easily accessible. The more often you see them, the better the chances of success. It helps as a reminder of your dream as well as helps you stay on track.  You may confide about your pursuit of goals to your near and dear ones. This is an excellent way to stay motivated.

4. Be flexible

Respect the plan and stick to it as far as possible. Do not deviate from the original plan unless you are forced to otherwise.  However, be prepared for minor setbacks and be ready to improvise and revise strategy. There is no need to panic when you face roadblocks on the way. It is impossible to anticipate all eventualities. Be flexible about the path, but do not compromise on your goals.

5. Reassess your goals periodically

People change over time, so do their outlook and dreams. Revisit your goals and plan at regular intervals to ensure that they are in tune with your present vision. In case your goal/goals are not in sync, go back to the drawing board and draw up new goals and plans.
